Fight Club
Overview
Fight Club is a 1999 film directed by David Fincher, based on the novel by Chuck Palahniuk, and it has become a cult classic that has sparked endless debate and analysis. The film follows an unnamed narrator (Edward Norton), a white-collar office worker suffering from severe insomnia. He hates his life — his soul-killing job as a recall coordinator for a major car company, his obsession with the IKEA furniture that fills his sterile apartment, his desperate attempts to be something he is not. His doctor refuses to prescribe him medication, suggesting that if he wants to see real suffering, he should attend a support group for testicular cancer. The narrator does, and he finds that crying with dying men helps him sleep. He becomes addicted to support groups, attending meetings for everything from tuberculosis to brain parasites. Then he meets Marla Singer (Helena Bonham Carter), a fellow "tourist" who is also faking her way through support groups, and her presence ruins his ability to cry. Then he meets Tyler Durden (Brad Pitt) on a beach, a charismatic, anarchic soap salesman with a philosophy of self-destruction. After the narrator's apartment explodes, he moves into Tyler's dilapidated house in a toxic waste zone. They start fighting in a bar parking lot, and the fights become a regular gathering — Fight Club. Men beating each other bloody, feeling something real for the first time. The club grows, and Tyler develops a larger plan: Project Mayhem, a series of acts of domestic terrorism designed to destroy the credit card companies, the museums, the symbols of the consumer culture that he believes is emasculating men. The narrator becomes increasingly disturbed by Tyler's violence, and he tries to stop him. Then comes the twist: Tyler Durden is a hallucination, a manifestation of everything the narrator wishes he could be. They are the same person. The narrator has been fighting himself, and Tyler's plans are his own. The film ends with the narrator shooting himself in the face, killing "Tyler," and watching as the buildings of the credit card companies explode around him. He holds hands with Marla, and the Pixies' "Where Is My Mind?" plays. Fight Club was a box office disappointment, failing to meet studio expectations, but it found its audience on DVD and has become one of the most discussed and analyzed films of its era. It was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Sound Effects Editing. The film's themes — masculinity, consumerism, identity, and the search for meaning in a soulless world — have only become more relevant over time. David Fincher's direction is stylish and aggressive, and Brad Pitt and Edward Norton have electric chemistry.
