Overview
The Color Purple is a 2023 musical drama film directed by Blitz Bazawule, based on the 1982 novel by Alice Walker and the 2005 stage musical of the same name. The film is the second film adaptation of the novel, following the 1985 film directed by Steven Spielberg. The film follows Celie (Fantasia Barrino), a young, poor, Black woman in the American South in the early 20th century. She is abused by her father and then by her husband, "Mister" (Colman Domingo). She finds solace in her relationship with her sister, Nettie, and with the blues singer Shug Avery (Taraji P. Henson). The film is a story of resilience, self-discovery, and the power of female friendship. It is a musical, and the songs are integrated into the narrative. The film was a critical and commercial success, earning over $60 million on a $90 million budget. It was nominated for numerous awards, including a Golden Globe for Best Motion Picture Musical or Comedy. Fantasia Barrino was praised for her performance, as were Danielle Brooks and Taraji P. Henson.
