Overview
Shogun Season 2 continues the epic historical drama set in feudal Japan, following the events of the critically acclaimed first season which won 14 Primetime Emmy Awards. The season picks up after Lord Toranaga's decisive victory at the Battle of Sekigahara, which has established him as the undisputed ruler of Japan and set the stage for the Tokugawa Shogunate that would rule for over 250 years. As Toranaga consolidates his power and prepares to officially become Shōgun, he faces new challenges that threaten his hard-won position: rival lords who still resent his authority and wait for any sign of weakness, the persistent threat of Portuguese and Spanish influence through Catholic missionaries who seek to convert Japan and establish colonial footholds, and the complex task of unifying a fractured nation that has been torn apart by decades of civil war. John Blackthorne, now known as Anjin (the Pilot), has fully embraced the samurai way of life and serves as Toranaga's trusted advisor on Western military technology and tactics. He is torn between his growing loyalty to Toranaga and his desire to return to England to see his family and report on his discoveries. Lady Mariko's death continues to haunt both men, her sacrifice at Osaka Castle serving as the emotional wound that neither can fully heal. The season introduces new characters from the historical record: Toranaga's half-brother, who schemes to claim power for himself; a female ninja assassin who targets the regime's most vulnerable members; and a young Christian convert whose faith puts her at odds with Toranaga's anti-Christian policies. Shogun Season 2 is a worthy continuation of one of television's most ambitious and acclaimed historical dramas.
