Overview

Thor: Ragnarok is a 2017 superhero film directed by Taika Waititi, the 17th film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The film follows Thor (Chris Hemsworth) as he is trapped on the planet Sakaar, a garbage-strewn wasteland ruled by the Grandmaster (Jeff Goldblum). He is forced to fight in the Grandmaster's gladiatorial arena, where he faces his old friend, the Hulk (Mark Ruffalo). Meanwhile, his sister, Hela (Cate Blanchett), the goddess of death, has returned to Asgard and has taken over the throne. The film is a hilarious, colorful, and irreverent reinvention of the Thor franchise. Waititi brings his signature comedic style, with witty dialogue, absurdist humor, and a vibrant, 1980s-inspired visual aesthetic. The film features a memorable performance by Jeff Goldblum as the Grandmaster, and by Tessa Thompson as Valkyrie, a hard-drinking, tough-as-nails warrior. The film ends with Thor destroying Asgard to stop Hela, and leading his people to Earth. Thor: Ragnarok was a critical and commercial success, earning over $854 million worldwide. The film was praised for its humor, its performances, and its creative direction. It is widely considered the best Thor film and one of the best films in the MCU.
