Overview
Wednesday is a 2022 supernatural mystery comedy horror television series directed by Tim Burton for Netflix, based on the character Wednesday Addams from The Addams Family. The series stars Jenna Ortega as Wednesday Addams, a morbid, sarcastic, and fiercely independent teenager who has been expelled from several schools for her violent and unusual methods of dealing with bullies. Her parents, Gomez (Luis Guzmán) and Morticia (Catherine Zeta-Jones), send her to their alma mater, Nevermore Academy, a school for outcasts — vampires, werewolves, sirens, gorgons, and other supernatural beings. Wednesday is determined to escape, but she finds herself drawn into a mystery. Students at Nevermore have been murdered by a monster, and Wednesday decides to investigate. She is partnered with a werewolf roommate, Enid Sinclair (Emma Myers), who is colorful, bubbly, and the opposite of Wednesday. She also has a love triangle with two boys: Tyler Galpin (Hunter Doohan), a "normie" (non-supernatural) who works at the local coffee shop, and Xavier Thorpe (Percy Hynes White), a psychic artist who can bring his drawings to life. The series is a coming-of-age story about finding your place in the world. Wednesday is a loner who believes she does not need friends, but she slowly learns that she cannot solve the mystery alone. The series is also a love letter to Tim Burton's aesthetic: gothic, whimsical, and darkly humorous. The production design is stunning, from the creepy Nevermore castle to the colorful town of Jericho. The most famous scene of the series is Wednesday's dance at the school's Rave'N dance, where she performs an interpretive dance to The Cramps' "Goo Goo Muck" that became a viral sensation. Jenna Ortega learned the dance herself and performed it without a stunt double. Wednesday was a massive success for Netflix, becoming the most-watched English-language series on the platform and setting a record for most hours viewed in a week. It was nominated for two Golden Globes and four Primetime Emmy Awards, winning one for Best Main Title Design. A second season is in production.
