Overview
The Conjuring is a 2013 supernatural horror film directed by James Wan, based on the real-life case files of paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren. The film is set in 1971 and follows the Perron family — father Roger (Ron Livingston), mother Carolyn (Lili Taylor), and their five daughters — who have just moved into an old, isolated farmhouse in Harrisville, Rhode Island. Almost immediately, strange things begin to happen. Doors open and close by themselves. The family dog is found dead. One of the daughters wakes up with mysterious bruises on her neck. A music box plays by itself. A doll, Annabelle, seems to move on its own. The family hears clapping from inside a dark wardrobe. A witch named Bathsheba, who cursed the land and sacrificed her infant to the devil in the 19th century, haunts the property. The Perrons contact Ed (Patrick Wilson) and Lorraine (Vera Farmiga) Warren, a married couple who are among the most famous paranormal investigators in the world. Ed is a demonologist, and Lorraine is a clairvoyant who can see spirits. They bring with them a team of investigators, and they set up cameras and equipment to document the haunting. What they discover terrifies even them: the house is not just haunted — it is occupied by a powerful, malevolent demon that wants to possess one of the daughters. The film is a masterclass in building tension through patient, classic horror techniques. James Wan uses slow zooms, creaking sounds, and shadows to create an atmosphere of dread. The film's most famous scene involves a clapping game: one of the daughters is trapped in a dark basement, and something invisible claps to trick her into revealing her location. Another terrifying sequence involves a wardrobe where a demonic presence hides, and the mother sees a terrifying figure on top of the wardrobe in the dark. The Warrens attempt an exorcism, and in a harrowing climax, Carolyn becomes possessed by the demon and must be saved by her family and the Warrens. The Conjuring was a massive critical and commercial success, earning over $319 million worldwide on a $20 million budget. It launched a shared universe of horror films, including sequels, the Annabelle films, The Nun, and The Curse of La Llorona. The Conjuring is widely considered one of the scariest and most effective horror films of its decade, proving that old-fashioned, atmospheric scares can still terrify modern audiences.
