Fast X
Overview
Fast X is a 2023 action film directed by Louis Leterrier, the tenth main installment in the Fast & Furious franchise. The film serves as the first part of a planned two-part finale to the long-running series about family, fast cars, and impossible stunts. The film follows Dominic Toretto (Vin Diesel) and his family — including Letty (Michelle Rodriguez), Roman (Tyrese Gibson), Tej (Ludacris), Ramsey (Nathalie Emmanuel), Han (Sung Kang), and Mia (Jordana Brewster) — as they face their most personal enemy yet. Dante Reyes (Jason Momoa) is the son of Hernan Reyes, the drug lord who was killed in Fast Five when Dom and his team stole his vault and destroyed his empire. Dante is flamboyant, unhinged, and utterly terrifying — he has been planning his revenge for over a decade. Unlike previous villains, Dante does not want money or power. He wants to make Dom suffer, to take away everyone he loves, one by one. He has infiltrated every level of the team's operation, and he uses his vast resources to frame Dom for a bombing in Rome, turning the world against him. The film features the franchise's trademark ridiculous but thrilling action: a car chase through Rome with a massive bomb rolling down the streets, a helicopter dragging a car through a dam, and a final sequence where Dom drives off a cliff to escape an explosion. The film also brings back familiar faces, including Jason Statham as Deckard Shaw, Charlize Theron as Cipher, and John Cena as Jakob Toretto. The film ends on a massive cliffhanger: Dom is trapped in a burning dam, his car submerged, while his son Brian is kidnapped by Dante. The rest of the team is in a plane that is being shot down. The film sets up Fast XI, which is expected to conclude the story. Jason Momoa steals the film as Dante, bringing a wild, unpredictable energy that is a departure from the franchise's usual villains. He is campy, cruel, and magnetic. Fast X was a box office success, earning over $714 million worldwide. While it received mixed reviews, it was praised for Momoa's performance and the emotional stakes. The film is a love letter to the franchise's history, filled with callbacks and cameos, and it sets the stage for an explosive finale.
