Your Name
Overview
Your Name is a 2016 Japanese animated romantic fantasy film written and directed by Makoto Shinkai, produced by CoMix Wave Films. The film became a massive cultural phenomenon in Japan and around the world, becoming the highest-grossing anime film of all time until it was surpassed by Demon Slayer: Mugen Train. The film follows two teenagers: Mitsuha Miyamizu (Mone Kamishiraishi), a high school girl living in the rural, mountainous town of Itomori, and Taki Tachibana (Ryunosuke Kamiki), a high school boy living in Tokyo. Mitsuha is frustrated with her life in the countryside; she dreams of living in Tokyo. Taki is frustrated with his life in the city; he works part-time at an Italian restaurant and dreams of becoming an architect. One day, they wake up and discover that they have swapped bodies. They have no idea why or how, but it keeps happening, randomly and without warning. The film follows their body-swapping adventures. They leave notes for each other on their phones and on their skin. Taki, in Mitsuha's body, helps her become more popular at school. Mitsuha, in Taki's body, helps him connect with his crush, Miki. They begin to develop feelings for each other. Then, the body-swapping stops. Taki tries to call Mitsuha, but her number is disconnected. He travels to Itomori, only to discover that the town was destroyed by a comet three years ago, on the day of the autumn festival. Mitsuha is dead. Taki realizes that he was swapping bodies with Mitsuha three years in the past. He drinks the kuchikamizake, a sake made by Mitsuha's grandmother, which allows him to travel back in time to the day of the festival. He meets Mitsuha, and they try to save the town. They succeed, but they forget each other's names, as is the cost of time travel. The film ends years later, with Taki and Mitsuha passing each other on a train in Tokyo. They feel a connection, and they get off the train and find each other. Taki asks, "I think I've met you before. What's your name?" The film ends, leaving the audience with a feeling of hope. Your Name was a critical and commercial success, earning over $380 million worldwide. It won numerous awards, including the Los Angeles Film Critics Association Award for Best Animated Film. The film is a beautiful, emotional, and visually stunning masterpiece about fate, memory, and the power of connection.
