Overview

True Detective is a 2014 anthology crime drama television series created by Nic Pizzolatto for HBO. Each season of the series features a new cast of characters, a new setting, and a new story. The first season is set in Louisiana, and it follows Detectives Rust Cohle (Matthew McConaughey) and Martin Hart (Woody Harrelson) as they investigate a serial killer over a period of 17 years. The season is a dark, philosophical, and atmospheric exploration of evil, time, and the nature of human consciousness. Matthew McConaughey gives a career-defining performance as Rust Cohle, a nihilistic, alcoholic, and brilliant detective. The second season is set in California, and it follows a corrupt police officer, a criminal, a detective, and a sheriff as they investigate a murder. The third season is set in the Ozarks, and it follows a detective as he investigates a decades-old case involving two missing children, with Mahershala Ali giving a powerful performance. The fourth season, True Detective: Night Country, is set in Alaska, and it follows two detectives (Jodie Foster and Kali Reis) as they investigate the disappearance of eight men from a research station. True Detective has won numerous awards, including a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Directing for a Drama Series for the first season. The series is known for its high-quality writing, acting, and direction. The first season is widely considered one of the greatest seasons of television ever made.
