Overview

Titanic is a 1997 epic romantic disaster film written, directed, and co-produced by James Cameron. The film is a fictionalized account of the sinking of the RMS Titanic, which struck an iceberg and sank on its maiden voyage from Southampton to New York City on April 15, 1912, killing over 1,500 people. The film interweaves a fictional love story with the historical tragedy. In the present day, treasure hunter Brock Lovett (Bill Paxton) searches the wreck of the Titanic for a legendary diamond called the Heart of the Ocean. Instead, he finds a drawing of a young nude woman wearing the necklace. The woman, Rose Dawson Calvert (Gloria Stuart), now 100 years old, sees the drawing on television and is brought to Lovett's ship. She tells her story: in 1912, 17-year-old Rose DeWitt Bukater (Kate Winslet), a wealthy, upper-class young woman, is engaged to the arrogant and abusive Cal Horden (Billy Zane). She feels trapped and suicidal. She meets Jack Dawson (Leonardo DiCaprio), a poor, free-spirited artist who won his ticket in a poker game. Jack saves Rose from jumping off the ship, and they begin a secret love affair. The film follows their romance against the backdrop of the opulent ship, with stunning production design that recreates the Titanic in incredible detail. The famous "I'm flying" scene at the bow of the ship is one of cinema's most iconic images. Then the ship hits the iceberg, and the second half of the film is a relentless, terrifying depiction of the sinking. Cameron spares no detail: the ship breaking in half, the people falling to their deaths, the lifeboats being lowered half-empty, the panic and chaos. Jack and Rose fight to survive, but in the end, Jack sacrifices himself, freezing to death in the Atlantic water so that Rose can survive on a piece of debris. The elderly Rose reveals that she did survive, and she lived a full life — she became an actress, learned to ride a horse, and had children. The film ends with Rose's spirit returning to the wreck and reuniting with Jack in the grand staircase, applauded by all the souls who died on the ship. Titanic was a cultural phenomenon, becoming the first film to earn over $1 billion worldwide and holding the record for highest-grossing film until Avatar. It won 11 Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Original Song for "My Heart Will Go On" by Celine Dion. Leonardo DiCaprio became a global heartthrob, and the film remains one of the most beloved romances of all time.
