The Witcher
Overview
The Witcher is a 2019 fantasy drama television series created by Lauren Schmidt Hissrich for Netflix, based on the book series by Polish author Andrzej Sapkowski. The series stars Henry Cavill as Geralt of Rivia, a solitary, mutated monster hunter known as a Witcher. Geralt is a "Witcher" — a human who has been subjected to genetic mutations and rigorous training that gives him superhuman strength, speed, reflexes, and the ability to survive the toxins needed to hunt monsters. He is also sterile, which isolates him from normal human life. The series is set on a fictional continent known as "The Continent," a medieval-inspired world filled with magic, monsters, and political intrigue. The series has a non-linear narrative structure, with the first season jumping between three different timelines that eventually converge. The other main characters are Yennefer of Vengerberg (Anya Chalotra), a powerful sorceress who was born with a hunchback and was sold by her father, and Ciri (Freya Allan), a young princess of the fallen kingdom of Cintra who has powerful magical abilities. Geralt and Ciri are bound by "the Law of Surprise" — a Witcher tradition where a man can claim as payment something he has but does not know. Geralt claimed Ciri before she was born, and their destinies are intertwined. The series explores themes of prejudice, as Witchers are hated and feared despite protecting humanity from monsters. Geralt is a reluctant hero, often saying he does not care about politics or the fate of kings, but he is repeatedly drawn into conflict. Henry Cavill is a passionate fan of the books and games, and he brings a physical intensity to the role, performing his own stunts and sword fighting. The series has been praised for its action sequences, particularly the sword fights, and for its complex characters. It has been criticized for its confusing timeline and for deviations from the source material. The series spawned a prequel, The Witcher: Blood Origin, and an animated film, The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf. After the third season, Cavill left the role and was replaced by Liam Hemsworth for the fourth season. The Witcher is a dark, mature, and entertaining fantasy series for fans of the genre.
