The White Lotus
Overview
The White Lotus is a 2021 satirical comedy-drama anthology television series created by Mike White for HBO. Each season of the series is set at a different White Lotus resort, a fictional luxury hotel chain, and follows the exploits of a different group of wealthy guests and the resort's staff over the course of a week. The first season is set at the White Lotus resort in Maui, Hawaii. The guests include: Shane Patton (Jake Lacy), a wealthy, spoiled newlywed who is furious that he did not get the room he booked; Rachel (Alexandra Daddario), his new wife, a journalist who is beginning to question her marriage; Tanya McQuoid (Jennifer Coolidge), a lonely, wealthy, and emotionally unstable woman who has come to Hawaii to scatter her mother's ashes; Mark (Steve Zahn) and Nicole Mossbacher (Connie Britton), a wealthy couple from San Francisco, and their children, Quinn (Fred Hechinger), a teenage boy who is addicted to his phone, and Olivia (Sydney Sweeney), a cynical, performative college student who is traveling with her friend, Paula (Brittany O'Grady). The season explores themes of class, race, and privilege. The guests are oblivious to their own wealth and power, and they treat the staff as invisible. The season ends with a death: Armond (Murray Bartlett), the resort manager, is accidentally stabbed by Shane, who was trying to defend himself. The second season is set at the White Lotus resort in Taormina, Sicily. The guests include: Tanya McQuoid (Jennifer Coolidge), now married to Greg (Jon Gries), a gruff, older man; Portia (Haley Lu Richardson), Tanya's assistant; Ethan (Will Sharpe) and Harper (Aubrey Plaza), a married couple who are growing distant; Cameron (Theo James) and Daphne (Meghann Fahy), a wealthy, charismatic couple who seem perfect; and two Italian sex workers, Lucia (Simona Tabasco) and Mia (Beatrice Grannò). The season explores themes of infidelity, desire, and the battle of the sexes. The season ends with multiple deaths: Tanya shoots and kills a group of gay men who were trying to scam her, and she then drowns after hitting her head. The third season is set at the White Lotus resort in Thailand, and it explores themes of death, spirituality, and Eastern religion. The White Lotus has won numerous awards, including 15 Primetime Emmy Awards. It has been praised for its writing, its performances, and its biting social commentary. The series is a brilliant, darkly funny, and often uncomfortable look at the lives of the wealthy and privileged.
