The Substance
Overview
The Substance is a 2024 body horror film written and directed by Coralie Fargeat, starring Demi Moore as Elisabeth Sparkle, a fading Hollywood star; Margaret Qualley as Sue, her younger, more beautiful doppelgänger; and Dennis Quaid as Harvey, a vulgar, misogynistic television producer. The film is set in Los Angeles. Elisabeth is a former A-list actress who is now hosting an aerobic exercise television show. She is fired on her 50th birthday, because she is too old. She is desperate. She is offered a black-market drug called "The Substance," which creates a younger, more perfect version of herself. The two versions of Elisabeth must share consciousness, switching every seven days. The film is a visceral, disgusting, and darkly comedic satire of Hollywood's obsession with youth and beauty. The body horror is extreme, with bodies splitting open, teeth falling out, and fingers rotting. The film is also a feminist allegory, about the way that women are taught to hate their own bodies. The film ends with Sue killing Elisabeth, and then being unable to maintain her own form. She transforms into a grotesque, monstrous creature, and she is killed. The Substance won the Best Screenplay award at the Cannes Film Festival. It was a critical success, praised for its boldness, its originality, and its performances, especially Demi Moore's. The film is a disturbing, unforgettable, and brilliant piece of feminist body horror.
