The Office
Overview
The Office is a 2005 mockumentary sitcom television series developed by Greg Daniels for NBC, based on the British series of the same name by Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant. The series is set at the Dunder Mifflin paper company in Scranton, Pennsylvania. The series follows the daily lives of the office employees, who are unaware that they are being filmed for a documentary. The series stars Steve Carell as Michael Scott, the delusional, inappropriate, and well-meaning regional manager; Rainn Wilson as Dwight Schrute, a power-hungry, socially awkward, beet-farming salesman; John Krasinski as Jim Halpert, a smart, funny salesman who is in love with the receptionist; Jenna Fischer as Pam Beesly, the receptionist who is engaged to a boring warehouse worker; and B.J. Novak as Ryan Howard, a temp who is later hired as a salesman. The series is famous for its cringe comedy, its talking-head interviews, and its memorable characters. The series was a slow-burn success, becoming more popular as it went on. It won five Primetime Emmy Awards, including Outstanding Comedy Series. The series ended with its ninth season, which was widely praised for its emotional finale, where the documentary finally airs and the characters watch themselves. The Office is one of the most popular and beloved sitcoms of the 21st century, and it remains one of the most-streamed shows on Peacock and Netflix.
