Overview
The Avengers is a 2012 superhero film directed by Joss Whedon, the sixth film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The film brings together the superheroes from previous Marvel films: Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.), Captain America (Chris Evans), Thor (Chris Hemsworth), Hulk (Mark Ruffalo), Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson), and Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner). The film is a masterclass in ensemble storytelling, giving each character a moment to shine. The team initially clashes, as they are all strong-willed and used to working alone. They eventually learn to work together, culminating in a thrilling, hour-long battle sequence in the streets of New York City. The film is funny, action-packed, and emotionally satisfying. The Avengers was a massive critical and commercial success, earning over $1.5 billion worldwide, becoming the third highest-grossing film of all time at its release. It was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Visual Effects. The film launched the concept of the shared cinematic universe, and it changed the way Hollywood makes blockbuster films.
