Overview
Peacemaker Season 2 returns John Cena's magnificently absurd and surprisingly moving superhero to a world that remains deeply confused about what to do with him. Christopher Smith — Peacemaker, the man who loves peace so much he is willing to kill anyone who threatens it — has spent the time since Season 1's events trying to be better, or at least trying to understand what better would look like for someone whose entire personality was constructed by an abusive, fascist father. The team is reassembled under new and more complicated circumstances, with Clemson Murn's absence still felt and the government's relationship with the Peacemaker program as morally ambiguous as ever. Waller (Viola Davis) is still pulling strings from behind the scenes, though her grip on the program is slipping as other government agencies begin to question her methods and her authority. Leota Adebayo (Danielle Brooks), whose journey in Season 1 moved from reluctant operative to genuine hero, now occupies a position of greater authority and greater responsibility — discovering that institutional power creates its own compromises, and that the person who signs the checks is not always the person you want to be. Vigilante (Freddie Stroma) continues to be the most genuinely disturbing comic relief on television, a man whose cheerful sociopathy James Gunn uses to illuminate what the show's more heroic characters are actually choosing not to be. The season introduces new villains: a tech billionaire who is creating his own superhero team (a parody of the Justice League), and a mysterious figure from Peacemaker's past who knows secrets about his father's death. The action sequences are more ambitious, including a spectacular fight set to an 80s power ballad and a running battle through a suburban mall. The Eagles of Death Metal needle drops remain perfect. The season also explores Peacemaker's relationship with his new pet eagle, Eagly, which is both hilarious and genuinely touching. Peacemaker Season 2 is funnier, stranger, and more emotionally ambitious than any show about a man in a chrome helmet with a peace sign has any right to be. The season ends with a setup for a third season, which James Gunn has confirmed is in development.
