Overview

Oppenheimer is a 2023 epic biographical thriller written and directed by Christopher Nolan, based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning book American Prometheus by Kai Bird and Martin J. Sherwin. The film tells the story of J. Robert Oppenheimer (Cillian Murphy), the brilliant theoretical physicist who led the Manhattan Project to develop the atomic bomb during World War II. The film is structured in two timelines, shot in black and white and color. The color sequences are from Oppenheimer's subjective perspective, following his life from his student days at Cambridge, where he was so depressed he tried to poison his tutor, to his time as a professor at Berkeley, and then to his recruitment by General Leslie Groves (Matt Damon) to run the top-secret Los Alamos laboratory in the New Mexico desert. The black and white sequences are from the perspective of Lewis Strauss (Robert Downey Jr.), a former chairman of the Atomic Energy Commission who held a grudge against Oppenheimer and orchestrated a humiliating security hearing that revoked his security clearance. The film depicts the immense pressure and moral weight of building the bomb. Oppenheimer and his team of scientists — including Edward Teller (Benny Safdie), Enrico Fermi (Danny Deferraci), and Richard Feynman (Jack Quaid) — work feverishly against the clock, knowing that Nazi Germany is also racing to build the same weapon. The film builds to the Trinity Test, the first detonation of a nuclear weapon on July 16, 1945. The sequence is breathtaking — the silence, then the blinding light, then the shockwave, then the roar of the explosion. Oppenheimer famously quoted the Bhagavad Gita: "Now I am become Death, the destroyer of worlds." After the bombs are dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, ending the war but killing hundreds of thousands of civilians, Oppenheimer is haunted by guilt. He tries to advocate for international control of nuclear weapons and opposes the development of the hydrogen bomb, making him a target of anti-communist zealots like Strauss. Cillian Murphy delivers a career-defining performance, conveying Oppenheimer's brilliance, arrogance, charisma, and deep moral anguish. Robert Downey Jr. gives one of his best performances as the resentful Strauss, earning him an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor. The film is also a technical marvel — Nolan shot it in IMAX 70mm film, used practical effects for the Trinity Test instead of CGI, and Ludwig Göransson's musical score is intense and relentless. Oppenheimer was a massive box office success, earning over $975 million worldwide, making it the highest-grossing biographical film ever. It won seven Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor for Cillian Murphy, Best Supporting Actor for Robert Downey Jr., and Best Original Score. Oppenheimer is a monumental achievement, a film about the burden of genius and the weight of creating something that could end the world.
