Nyad
Overview
Nyad is a 2023 biographical sports drama film directed by Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi and Jimmy Chin, based on the true story of Diana Nyad (Annette Bening), a long-distance swimmer who, at the age of 64, attempted to swim from Cuba to Florida. The film follows Nyad's journey over several years, as she attempts the 110-mile swim through shark-infested waters, jellyfish, and strong currents. She is coached by her best friend, Bonnie Stoll (Jodie Foster), and she is supported by a team of navigators and doctors. The film is a meditation on aging, determination, and the power of friendship. Annette Bening gives a powerful, physical performance, and Jodie Foster is excellent as her supportive, no-nonsense friend. The film was a critical success, earning two Academy Award nominations for Best Actress for Annette Bening and Best Supporting Actress for Jodie Foster.
