Nosferatu
Overview
Nosferatu is a 2024 gothic horror film written and directed by Robert Eggers, a remake of the 1922 silent film of the same name. The film stars Bill Skarsgård as Count Orlok (the Nosferatu), Lily-Rose Depp as Ellen Hutter, Nicholas Hoult as Thomas Hutter, and Willem Dafoe as Professor Albin Eberhart Von Franz. The film is set in 19th-century Germany, in the fictional city of Wisborg. Thomas Hutter is a young, naive real estate agent who is sent to Transylvania to sell a property to the mysterious Count Orlok. He is trapped in Orlok's castle, and he discovers that Orlok is a vampire. He escapes, but Orlok travels to Wisborg, bringing the plague with him. The film is a slow-burn, atmospheric, and terrifying gothic horror film. Eggers uses practical effects, natural lighting, and long takes to create a sense of dread. The film is a meditation on death, desire, and the nature of evil. The film ends with Ellen sacrificing herself to destroy Orlok. She invites him into her room, and she distracts him until sunrise. He is destroyed, and she dies. Nosferatu was a critical and commercial success, earning over $100 million on a $50 million budget. The film was praised for its performances, its direction, and its stunning visuals. Bill Skarsgård was unrecognizable under heavy prosthetics, and he delivered a terrifying, iconic performance.
