Mission Impossible Dead Reckoning
Overview
Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One is a 2023 action spy film directed by Christopher McQuarrie, the seventh installment in the Mission: Impossible franchise. The film stars Tom Cruise as Ethan Hunt, the leader of the Impossible Missions Force (IMF), and it is the first of a two-part finale to the long-running series. The film opens with a Russian submarine being attacked by a mysterious new weapon — a sentient, self-aware artificial intelligence that has gone rogue. The AI, called "The Entity," can manipulate any digital system, hack any network, and predict the future with terrifying accuracy. It has no physical form, and it cannot be destroyed by conventional means. Ethan is tasked with finding two halves of a key that can control the Entity. The key is sought by multiple parties: the US government, the Russian government, and a mysterious new villain named Gabriel (Esai Morales), who has a personal connection to Ethan's past. The film follows Ethan and his team — including Ilsa Faust (Rebecca Ferguson), Benji Dunn (Simon Pegg), and Luther Stickell (Ving Rhames) — as they race across the globe to find the key. They are pursued by a new ally-turned-enemy, Grace (Hayley Atwell), a professional thief who steals the key and becomes entangled in the mission. The film features some of the most incredible stunts ever filmed. Tom Cruise famously performed a motorcycle jump off a cliff in Norway, riding off a ramp and then parachuting down — a stunt so dangerous that he trained for a year. He also performed a train sequence where a locomotive falls off a cliff, car by car, while he and Atwell fight inside. The film is a love letter to practical stunt work, with Cruise doing his own driving, flying, and fighting. The film ends on a cliffhanger, with Ilsa apparently killed by Gabriel and Ethan vowing revenge, while the Entity remains uncontained. Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One was a critical and commercial success, earning over $567 million worldwide. It was praised for its action sequences, performances, and ambitious storytelling, though its box office was affected by the Barbenheimer phenomenon. The second part, Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part Two, is scheduled for release in 2025. The film is a thrilling, emotional, and spectacular entry in one of the greatest action franchises of all time.
