Overview

Gladiator is a 2000 epic historical action film directed by Ridley Scott, starring Russell Crowe as the Roman general Maximus Decimus Meridius. The film is set in 180 AD and follows Maximus, a beloved and loyal general who has just led the Roman army to a great victory over the Germanic tribes. The aging Emperor Marcus Aurelius (Richard Harris) tells Maximus that he will name him as his successor, bypassing his own son Commodus (Joaquin Phoenix), because he believes Maximus has the wisdom and integrity to restore the Roman Republic. Commodus, a petulant, jealous, and narcissistic young man, is enraged. He murders his father, seizes the throne, and orders the execution of Maximus and his family. Maximus escapes but is too late to save his wife and son, who have been crucified. He collapses and is captured by slave traders, who sell him to a gladiator trainer named Proximo (Oliver Reed). Maximus, now a slave, is forced to fight as a gladiator in the arenas of North Africa. He refuses to remove his helmet and reveal his identity, but his skill and ferocity make him a legend. He is brought to Rome to compete in the Colosseum, where he becomes a folk hero to the oppressed masses. Commodus, who is obsessed with being loved by the people, is threatened by Maximus's popularity. The film builds to a final confrontation in the Colosseum, where Commodus challenges Maximus to a duel. Commodus stabs Maximus before the fight, but Maximus, despite his wound, kills Commodus. He dies in the sand, his vision of his wife and son waiting for him in the afterlife. He tells his friend Quintus (Tomas Arana) to free the gladiators and to restore the Republic. Russell Crowe delivers a powerful, stoic performance, conveying Maximus's pain, rage, and nobility. Joaquin Phoenix is brilliant as the insecure, monstrous Commodus, one of cinema's great villains. The film's score by Hans Zimmer is iconic, and the battle sequences are brutal and realistic. Oliver Reed died during filming, and his scenes were completed using CGI. Gladiator was a massive box office success, earning over $460 million worldwide. It won five Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Actor for Russell Crowe, and Best Visual Effects. Gladiator revitalized the historical epic genre and remains a classic of modern cinema.
