Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
Overview
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind is a 2004 science fiction romantic drama film directed by Michel Gondry, written by Charlie Kaufman. The film stars Jim Carrey as Joel Barish and Kate Winslet as Clementine Kruczynski, a couple who undergo a medical procedure to erase each other from their memories. The film is set in New York City, in a slightly surreal, dreamlike version of the present day. Joel is a shy, introverted, and depressed man. Clementine is a spontaneous, impulsive, and unpredictable woman. They meet on a train, and they fall in love. Their relationship is passionate and turbulent. They fight, they break up, and they get back together. Clementine decides to have Joel erased from her memory. She goes to Lacuna, Inc., a company that specializes in memory erasure. When Joel learns what she has done, he decides to have her erased from his memory as well. The film follows Joel as he undergoes the procedure. He revisits his memories of Clementine, and he realizes that he does not want to lose them. He tries to fight the procedure, hiding Clementine in memories that are not connected to her. The film is a non-linear, fragmented, and dreamlike exploration of memory, love, and loss. It is a meditation on the nature of identity: are we the sum of our memories? The film ends with Joel and Clementine meeting again, after the procedure. They receive tapes of their interviews with Lacuna, in which they reveal the worst things about each other. They are disgusted, but they decide to try again. The film ends with them running through the snow, laughing. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind was a critical and commercial success, earning over $74 million on a $20 million budget. It won the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay. The film is a masterpiece of surrealist storytelling and a profound meditation on love.
