Cabrini
Overview
Cabrini is a 2024 biographical drama film directed by Alejandro Monteverde, based on the life of Francesca Cabrini (Cristiana Dell'Anna), a Catholic missionary who founded the Missionary Sisters of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. The film is set in New York City in the late 19th century. Mother Cabrini is a small, frail, and sickly woman. She is told by the Pope that she cannot go to China, as she had hoped. Instead, she is sent to New York City, to help the Italian immigrants who are living in poverty, squalor, and disease. She arrives in the Five Points, one of the most dangerous slums in the city. She is opposed by the Archbishop of New York, Michael Corrigan (David Morse), who wants her to leave. She is also opposed by the corrupt politicians and the violent gangs. She is determined to build a hospital, a school, and an orphanage. She is a fierce, stubborn, and resourceful woman. She raises money from wealthy benefactors, she fights with the city government, and she inspires her sisters to work tirelessly. She eventually succeeds, building hospitals and schools across the United States, Europe, and South America. She becomes the first American citizen to be canonized as a saint. Cabrini was a critical and commercial success, earning over $19 million on a $50 million budget. The film was praised for its performances, its direction, and its inspiring story of faith and determination.
