Overview

Big Little Lies is a 2017 drama television series created by David E. Kelley for HBO, based on the 2014 novel of the same name by Liane Moriarty. The series is set in the wealthy, coastal town of Monterey, California. The series follows a group of mothers whose lives are upended by a murder. The series stars Reese Witherspoon as Madeline Martha Mackenzie, a loud, passionate, and dramatic mother; Nicole Kidman as Celeste Wright, a beautiful, wealthy mother who is in an abusive marriage; Shailene Woodley as Jane Chapman, a young, single mother who is haunted by her past; Laura Dern as Renata Klein, a powerful, successful businesswoman; and Zoë Kravitz as Bonnie Carlson, a kind, spiritual yoga instructor. The series explores themes of domestic violence, sexual assault, motherhood, and the secrets that lie beneath the surface of a perfect life. The first season ends with the revelation that Bonnie killed Perry (Alexander Skarsgård), Celeste's abusive husband, to save Celeste. The second season explores the aftermath of the murder and the trial. Big Little Lies won numerous awards, including eight Primetime Emmy Awards, and two Golden Globes.
