Barbarian
Overview
Barbarian is a 2022 horror thriller film written and directed by Zach Cregger. The film stars Georgina Campbell as Tess, a young woman who arrives at a rental house in a dilapidated Detroit neighborhood; Bill Skarsgård as Keith, a man who has also rented the house; and Justin Long as AJ, the owner of the house. The film is set in a run-down, blighted neighborhood in Detroit. Tess arrives at the house for her rental, only to find that it has been double-booked. Keith is already there. They agree to share the house for the night. They discover a hidden door in the basement, leading to a labyrinth of tunnels. They find a woman (played by a terrifying Matthew Patrick Davis) living in the tunnels, a mutated, inbred creature who has been raised in captivity. The film is a terrifying, unpredictable, and darkly funny horror film. It subverts expectations, with a shocking twist halfway through. The film is a commentary on gentrification, gender dynamics, and the nature of evil. Barbarian was a critical and commercial success, earning over $45 million on a $4.5 million budget. The film was praised for its suspense, its originality, and its performances.
