A Complete Unknown
Overview
A Complete Unknown is a 2024 biographical musical drama film directed by James Mangold, based on the life of Bob Dylan. The film stars Timothée Chalamet as Bob Dylan, with Elle Fanning as Sylvie Russo (a stand-in for Suze Rotolo), Edward Norton as Pete Seeger, and Monica Barbaro as Joan Baez. The film is set in New York City in the early 1960s, during the folk music revival. Bob Dylan is a 19-year-old from Minnesota who arrives in Greenwich Village with nothing but a guitar and a harmonica. He is a mysterious, enigmatic figure, who lies about his past and his identity. He is taken under the wing of Pete Seeger, the legendary folk singer, who is a mentor to a generation of young musicians. He falls in love with Sylvie, a young art student, and he becomes friends with Joan Baez, the "Queen of Folk." The film follows Dylan's rise to fame. He writes protest songs, like "Blowin' in the Wind" and "The Times They Are a-Changin'." He becomes the voice of his generation. But Dylan is restless and rebellious. He rejects the label of "protest singer." He experiments with electric guitar and rock and roll, alienating his folk audience. The film ends with the 1965 Newport Folk Festival, where Dylan performs an electric set, backed by members of the Paul Butterfield Blues Band. The audience boos, and Pete Seeger tries to cut the power. The film ends with Dylan walking off the stage, a complete unknown. A Complete Unknown was a critical and commercial success, earning over $130 million worldwide. It was nominated for eight Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Actor for Timothée Chalamet. Chalamet performed all of the songs himself, and he learned to play guitar and harmonica for the role. The film is a brilliant portrait of an artist who refused to be defined.
